1871  (1877)  British Columbia boasts of having seven or eight varieties of the grouse kind, the most abundant being the sage hen . . . and the spruce partridge or fool-hen, that is oftener knocked over with a stick than shot.
1952  In the very dry parts of the Okanagan there is a desert fauna including the pocket gopher . . . sage grouse. . . .
1956  The display includes the six native grouse species in the province: pinnated grouse (the true prairie chicken); sharp tailed grouse; sage grouse; ruffed grouse; ptarmigan; and spruce grouse or "fool hen."
